Course Description

Are you a pop music fan who has always been bored by the orchestra and classical music? Have you always wondered why it seems to be popular among a very select group of people? Have you thought about how pop, rock, rap, R&B, and other groups use the orchestra in their work? I am here to talk to you about all these things and more.
Each class, we’ll talk about one classical composer (Mahler, Berberian, Mozart, and Bach) and one modern artist (Radiohead, Jay-Z, Lizzo, Metallica, and Bowie).
All materials and listening examples will be provided in the class. Note that both classes in the week are the same and will discuss (for example) Radiohead and Stravinsky. Just two different times.

Required Materials

  • All materials will be provided for the class!

Class Experience

  • This class will be discussion and lecture based. You won't need to know how to read music, but we will be talking, listening, reacting, and discussing what we hear. We will break down the instruments, sounds, structure, lyrics, and construction of both and demystify all sides along the way. We'll talk about the sordid and funny history of performances and composers as well as the recording and writing process and crazy stories of modern musicians and bands.

Instructor Expertise

  • I am a musicologist and performer who has taught at universities and conservatories for the past 7 years. I am an active performer and lover of all types of music.
